Sump Pump Installation & Replacement in Barrie
The sump pump is the working heart of most basement drainage systems — and the single point of failure. We install, replace and back up pumps so one bad storm or one power outage cannot flood your basement.
What your sump system actually does
Everything else in a waterproofing system is passive — membranes block, channels collect, tile carries. The pump is the one component that has to work: when the pit fills, it must switch on, lift the water, and push it out through the discharge line, every time, for years.
In Barrie that matters most exactly when conditions are worst — during the spring melt, and during summer storms heavy enough to knock the power out. A pump that has been running fine for ten quiet years tells you nothing about the next big week of meltwater.
That is why we treat the sump as a system: pit, pump, float, check valve, discharge, and backup — not just a motor in a hole.
What we install and why
- Properly sized pump
Pump capacity is matched to the water volume your tile actually delivers — an undersized pump falls behind in a melt; a grossly oversized one short-cycles itself to an early death.
- Sump liner and sealed lid
A proper perforated liner keeps soil out and lets water in; a sealed lid keeps humidity, radon-laden soil air, odours and curious kids out of the pit.
- Check valve
Without one, every pump cycle lets the full discharge column fall back into the pit — the pump then re-pumps the same water for its whole life.
- Discharge line done right
Water leaves the house and is released onto grade that slopes away — never beside the wall where it soaks straight back down, and never into the sanitary sewer, which municipalities prohibit.
- Battery backup (recommended)
A secondary pump with its own float and battery takes over during outages or if the primary fails. Storm, outage and full pit is the exact scenario backups exist for.
- Alarm options
High-water alarms — local or Wi-Fi — tell you the pit is rising before the floor tells you.

Between professional visits, these quick checks catch most problems early:
- Pour a bucket of water into the pit twice a year — the pump should start, empty the pit and stop cleanly.
- Do it before the melt — early March is the right moment to find a dead pump, not mid-April.
- Look at the discharge outlet outside: it must be clear of snow, ice, leaves and soil, and the water must visibly flow away from the house.
- Listen for short-cycling — a pump kicking on every couple of minutes in dry weather usually means the check valve has failed.
- Test the backup battery per its indicator; batteries age even when never used.

How long does a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years is typical for a residential pump, depending on how often it runs and the sediment in the water. Pumps in high-water-table areas work harder and retire earlier.
Do I really need a battery backup?
If your basement is finished, or the pit fills during storms, yes. The heaviest inflows arrive with the same storms that cause outages — the primary pump is at its most needed exactly when it has no power.
Where should the discharge go?
Onto your property, at least a couple of metres from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away — or into a storm connection where one exists. Not into the sanitary sewer (prohibited by municipalities) and not beside the wall, where it just recirculates.
My pump runs but the basement still got wet — why?
Common causes: the water is entering somewhere the drainage system does not reach (a crack, a window well), the discharge line froze or clogged so the pump had nowhere to send water, or the inflow simply exceeded pump capacity. Each has a different fix — this is a diagnosis visit, not automatically a bigger pump.
